Scottish Enterprise

We are Scotland’s main economic, enterprise, innovation and investment agency. Our ultimate goal is to stimulate sustainable growth of Scotland’s economy.

To achieve this we help ambitious and innovative businesses grow and become more successful. We also work with public and private sector partners to develop the business environment in Scotland. We deliver a range of dedicated support services locally, nationally and internationally. Our activities help businesses with the appetite and capacity to grow to:

  • improve efficiencies
  • access new sources of funding
  • conquer new markets

Scotland Europa is Scottish Enterprise’s dedicated EU policy and funding team. We are also a membership organisation that promotes Scotland’s interests across the institutions of the EU and to the representatives of Europe’s regions and Member States. We help Scottish organisations foster successful European relationships, providing guidance on how they make best use of opportunities arising from EU policies and funding. We also manage Scotland House, the Brussels base which we share with the Scottish Government, HIEP and a number of other Scottish partners. Scotland House also provides excellent conference centre facilities in an ideal location at the heart of the EU quarter.

Scottish Government

The devolved government for Scotland is responsible for most of the issues of day-to-day concern to the people of Scotland, including health, education, justice, rural affairs, and transport.

The Scottish Government was known as the Scottish Executive when it was established in 1999 following the first elections to the Scottish Parliament. The current administration was formed after elections in May 2007.

The Government’s purpose is to focus government and public services on creating a more successful country, with opportunities for all of Scotland to flourish, through increasing sustainable economic growth.

The Scottish Government’s EU Office is based in Brussels and supports the EU related work of the Government, helping to increase Scotland’s influence in the heart of the EU decision making centre. Officials provide operational support to the Government by gathering information, developing regional and national links and attending and monitoring Council working groups, sessions of the European Parliament and other events to ensure that decision makers in Scotland are kept fully informed of the latest developments in the EU.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is the Scottish Government’s economic and community development agency for a diverse region which covers more than half of Scotland.

HIE aims to build sustainable economic growth in all parts of the Highlands and Islands.

Under the heading of Highlands and Islands European Partnership, Highlands and Islands Enterprise works in partnership with the local authorities in the Highlands and Islands to ensure that the HIE area secures maximum benefit from European policies and funding opportunities. In order to achieve this an office in Scotland House, Brussels is staffed by two HIEP officers who are employed by HIE and are part of the International affairs team.
